DTE Electric’s residential Time of Day rate runs an 11am–7pm peak window every single day of the year, with almost no seasonal variation. That consistency makes it one of the simpler TOU plans on this list to actually plan around, once you know the window.

Same 8-hour window year-round, just a slightly higher rate in the five hottest months. That’s unusual on this list, most utilities either move the window seasonally or keep the rate flat while the window shifts. DTE does neither, the schedule is genuinely one thing to remember, all year.
DTE also runs a Retail Access version of this rate (D1.2 Retail Access) for customers who buy their electricity supply from a competitive provider, priced somewhat lower since it excludes generation charges, plus two smaller time-of-use pilot rates (D1-A, D1-B) with a narrower 3–7pm window and a much tighter peak/off-peak spread. The full-service D1.2 rate above is the one most residential customers on DTE’s standard bundled service would be evaluating.
What Shifting Is Worth, in Dollars
Take a summer weekday: dishwasher after lunch and a load of laundry, about 4 kWh, run inside the 11am–7pm window.
At peak: 4 kWh × $0.2488 = $1.00 Same load shifted to after 7pm: 4 kWh × $0.148 = $0.59
That’s $0.41 saved per shifted routine, a 41% cut. Over 200 days a year, moving one daily routine out of the 8-hour window is worth roughly $82/year, a steady, modest number rather than a dramatic one, consistent with DTE’s overall lower rate spread compared to Western utilities on this list.
An 8-Hour Window Is Easier to Plan Around Than It Looks
Unlike utilities with a narrow 3-hour evening peak, DTE’s window runs from mid-morning through early evening. That sounds harder to avoid, but it actually leaves the entire night, from 7pm to 11am the next day, as off-peak. Anyone with a normal after-dinner and overnight routine, laundry before bed, dishwasher run at 9pm, EV charging overnight, never touches the peak window at all without any extra effort.
Should You Switch to Time of Day?
Because the peak/off-peak gap here (about 41%) is more modest than several other utilities on this list, the case for switching depends more on whether your household is naturally out of the house, or running the AC hardest, during exactly 11am–7pm. Retirees or anyone home and active through the entire afternoon should run the numbers carefully before switching; households that are mostly out during the day and active only in the evening and morning will likely see a real, if moderate, savings.
