Balcony Solar vs Rooftop Solar

An 800W balcony kit and an 8kW rooftop array solve different problems. Here's the payback math, savings ceiling, and which one fits your situation.

These are not competing products. Balcony solar is for renters, shaded yards, and people who want a $700 experiment. Rooftop solar is for homeowners with a good roof and a 25-year horizon. The mistake I see is comparing them on total savings instead of access and payback per dollar spent.

*Rooftop savings assume NEM 3.0 in California with battery for afternoon peak offset. Export credits alone (~$0.05–0.08/kWh) do not support the bill without self-consumption or storage.

When balcony solar wins

You rent. Rooftop solar is not an option without landlord cooperation and a long lease. Balcony kits are portable.

You want the fastest payback on cash deployed. In Los Angeles at 28¢/kWh, a $700 balcony kit can pay back in under 3 years. A $22,000 rooftop system without the expired federal credit takes 8–12 years even in California.

You cannot get a good roof. Multi-story shading, north-facing roof, or HOA restrictions on rooftop arrays leave balcony or ground-mount plug-in as the only solar path.

You want to test solar before committing. A $500–$800 balcony system teaches you your real self-consumption pattern. That data informs whether a future rooftop or battery investment makes sense.

When rooftop wins

You own the home and plan to stay 10+ years. Lifetime savings are an order of magnitude higher. Rooftop covers 80–120% of usage with storage; balcony covers 10–30%.

You need bill elimination, not bill reduction. Balcony solar will not zero out a $200/month electric bill. An properly sized rooftop + battery can come close in California.

You want property value increase. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab data consistently shows owned rooftop solar adds roughly 4% to home value (~$15,000–$30,000 on median US homes). Portable balcony equipment leaves with you.

Your state has strong net metering for interconnected systems. Plug-in balcony systems generally do not get NEM export credits. Rooftop systems do (though NEM 3.0 export values are low in California).

The self-consumption variable

Balcony solar economics live or die on self-consumption rate. Without net metering, exported kWh earn nothing.

A 1–2 kWh battery ($800–$1,500 add-on) pushes self-consumption toward 90% but extends payback. Battery backup calculator runs the tradeoff.

Rooftop with battery faces the same NEM 3.0 export problem in California, but the absolute kWh volume is 10x larger, so the savings ceiling is much higher.

The federal tax credit changed the comparison

The 30% residential credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. A $22,000 rooftop that would have cost ~$15,400 after credit now costs full price. Balcony kits were always too small to drive the decision and still are not eligible in most interpretations.

Net effect: rooftop got 30% more expensive relative to 2024. Balcony entry price unchanged. That narrows the lifetime-savings gap but widens the accessibility gap. Details: federal solar tax credit 2026.
