What is special about Utah if other states have passed laws too?
Utah was first/clearest for actual market deployment and EcoFlow-style product rollout. Other states may have laws passed or pending, but effective dates, product certification, local code, utility forms, and manufacturer shipping choices can still lag.
Is EcoFlow STREAM only shipping to Utah because it is illegal elsewhere?
Not necessarily. Shipping policy is a company risk/compliance decision. The legal issue is not owning the hardware; it is using it as plug-in grid-tied solar in a way that complies with state law, utility rules, certification, and electrical code.
Does EcoFlow STREAM ship to all states?
Previously discussed as not broadly shipping the plug-in solar configuration everywhere; EcoFlow appeared to limit plug-in solar deployment to places it considered compliant, especially Utah and possibly Maryland. Need current product page check before treating as final.
What EcoFlow product is plug-in solar plus battery?
EcoFlow STREAM / STREAM Ultra was discussed as the plug-in solar battery/inverter product family; the legally tricky part is grid-tied plug-in operation, not just battery ownership.
What is the EcoFlow STREAM Ultra and what does it do?
It is a plug-in solar/battery/inverter-style system designed to take solar input, store energy, and discharge into home loads. Its control logic likely uses load sensing / app control / inverter limits, but API details needed separate verification.
I want this in California — can I use it there?
California was treated as harder than Utah. The issue is likely system-level plug-in PV certification and utility/code acceptance; California may require a certified complete kit, not just a UL-listed microinverter.
Is it legal in other states — why only Utah?
Because a state law can allow the category but still require effective dates, certifications, local code compliance, utility forms, and product-specific approvals. Manufacturers may only ship where they are confident.
If the buyer gets an interconnection permit — is it legal?
Possibly, but then it may stop being treated as a simple plug-in/balcony solar device and becomes a normal interconnection/code/permitting project. Cost and process depend on utility/jurisdiction.
How much is an interconnection permit?
No single number; utility interconnection may be free or modest for small systems, but electrician/permitting/code work can dominate. Needs utility-specific lookup.
Will plug-in solar cause a fire?
It can if the product is wrong, circuit is overloaded, outlet is loose/corroded, extension cords are used, multiple units share a circuit, or the kit is not certified. A certified complete kit on the right circuit is much lower risk.
What are the main fire risks?
Branch-circuit overload, bad receptacles, undersized/old wiring, extension cords, non-weatherproof outdoor wiring, non-certified kits, multiple devices on one circuit, and lack of proper shutdown/backfeed controls.
Who is liable if there is a fire?
Could be customer, installer/electrician, landlord/property owner, product manufacturer, seller, or utility depending on cause. These laws often protect the utility from liability but not everyone else.
Does liability change in California vs Utah?
Yes. Utah has a specific plug-in solar law that reduces utility/interconnection ambiguity. California likely has more unresolved product/code/utility risk unless a compliant certified system and local approval path exist.
How much would plug-in solar save on my PG&E bill?
For the prior production estimate around 6,678 kWh/year AC, rough savings were estimated around $2,270–$2,870/year best case, $1,200–$1,800/year middle case, and $500–$1,200/year bad case depending on real-time self-consumption/export treatment.
Is plug-in solar savings based on offset?
Yes. The value mostly comes from offsetting household load in real time. Exported energy is often uncompensated or may even create billing issues depending on meter/tariff.
What is a microinverter in this context?
It converts DC power from solar panels into AC power that can serve home loads. For plug-in solar, the inverter also needs anti-islanding and may need system-level certification/control.
What is UL 3700?
UL 3700 is a system-level safety standard for plug-in PV kits. It tests the complete kit behavior, not just individual components, including shutdown, plug safety, overload/reverse-current behavior, and misuse scenarios.
Why is UL 3700 different from UL 1741?
UL 1741 is inverter/grid-interconnection focused. UL 3700 is for the complete plug-in PV system as a consumer product. A UL 1741 inverter alone does not automatically make the whole plug-in kit compliant.
What are the parts of a UL 3700-style plug-in solar kit?
Panels, mounting, microinverter/inverter, plug/cord, AC connector, shutdown/anti-islanding controls, overload/backfeed protection, instructions/labels, possibly CT/load sensor/export limiter, and sometimes battery/control unit.
What is the Enphase balcony solar kit?
The Enphase IQ Balcony Solar Kit was discussed as a plug-in balcony solar system for 230V/50Hz markets, not directly the same as U.S. 120V plug-in solar rules.
Why can’t I just run an extension cord into the house and plug it in?
Because extension cords create overheating, weatherproofing, trip/damage, code, and misuse risks. Plug-in solar laws/certifications generally assume a defined cord/outlet setup, not random extension cords.
Why does the outlet have to be outside?
Outdoor placement avoids running cords through doors/windows/walls and better matches weatherproof outlet/in-use cover requirements. Indoor extension-cord routing is a major safety/code problem.
This says a 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet works — is that true?
For Utah-style systems, a standard 120V NEMA 5-15 outlet can be part of the allowed setup if the device is compliant, power-limited, certified, and installed/used per requirements. The outlet alone does not make any kit legal.
What does dedicated circuit mean?
A circuit serving only that specific outlet/load, not shared with other receptacles/lights/appliances. This reduces overload risk when backfeeding or supplying power through the branch circuit.
How do I know if a specific outlet is on a dedicated circuit?
Turn off breakers and test what else loses power; inspect panel labels; use a circuit tracer; check wiring; or have an electrician verify. You cannot know just by looking at the outlet.
What would an electrician do that I couldn’t do myself?
Verify breaker/circuit/outlet rating, check whether the circuit is dedicated, inspect wiring condition, confirm GFCI/weatherproofing, install a dedicated outlet/circuit if needed, correct panel issues, and document compliance.
What products would be approved?

What certification is required?

Are these devices eligible for net metering?
No for the plug-in/balcony device category in the states discussed. They offset load but do not get net-metering credit.
Does any state in this group allow net metering for balcony solar?
No. Utah, Maine, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont were all marked FALSE for net metering for the plug-in device category.
Can exported energy be compensated?
Generally no. Vermont explicitly says exported generation is uncompensated; Maine bans net energy billing; Utah/Virginia exclude net metering; Connecticut warns excess may be charged as usage unless the meter supports netting.
What are devices that prevent energy flowing back called?
Export limiter, zero-export controller, non-export control system, backfeed prevention device, reverse power protection, CT clamp/load sensor, power control system, or PCS.
Is zero-export the same as anti-islanding?
No. Anti-islanding shuts off during outages. Zero-export/export limiting prevents normal-operation export while the grid is live.
Is zero-export/export limiting required in these states?
Only Virginia was marked TRUE as a clear statutory zero-export/export prevention requirement. Utah, Maine, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont were marked FALSE based on the normal-operation zero-export definition.
Is anti-islanding required?
Yes, generally. The device must stop energizing the grid/building electrical system during an outage.

Is fire-risk liability specified?
Some statutes shield utilities from liability. Landlord/HOA/property damage responsibility varies. Product/manufacturer/installer/customer liability still depends on cause and facts.
Can a landlord block balcony solar?
Depends heavily by state. Virginia and Vermont have clearer tenant protections. Utah’s plug-in solar law does not clearly protect renters against landlords. Colorado has HOA/common-interest protections more than pure renter protections. Others are weaker/silent.
Can an HOA block balcony solar?
Depends. Utah has separate solar-access protections for owners, but not a clean renter balcony-solar rule. Colorado and Vermont have stronger anti-blocking language with reasonable restrictions. Virginia has landlord/property restrictions. Others vary or are silent.
Did Utah pass a bill disallowing landlords from blocking this?

Why would plug-in solar be safe/legal in Utah but not California?

What is the difference between using a plug-in kit and a normal interconnection?
