Power Stations vs Plug-In Solar

Jackery and Bluetti are not balcony solar. Here is the difference between portable power stations and UL-listed plug-in microinverters that offset your utility bill.

Reddit threads about balcony solar constantly mix up two products that both plug into a wall outlet:

  1. Portable power stations (Jackery, Bluetti, EcoFlow Delta)
  2. Grid-tied plug-in microinverters (EcoFlow STREAM, Hoymiles, APsystems)

They look similar in marketing photos. They behave completely differently on your bill and with your utility.

How plug-in solar works

A UL 1741 SB-listed microinverter converts panel DC to AC synchronized with the grid. When you plug it into an outlet, power flows into your home circuits and offsets utility draw in real time. Your meter slows down (or spins backward on legacy meters during surplus).

  • Stays connected whenever the grid is up
  • Anti-islanding shuts output during outages (protects line workers)
  • Designed for continuous outdoor operation
  • Subject to state plug-in solar laws and utility notification rules

How power stations work

A portable power station is a battery with an inverter inside. You charge it from the grid, from car DC, or from separate portable solar panels. You run loads from its AC outlets.

  • Not grid-tied for bill offset (does not push power into wall circuits to offset meter)
  • Some models allow “pass-through” charging but that is not net metering
  • Excellent for camping, outages, van life
  • Portable solar panels for power stations are often not UL 1741 grid-tie listed

Buying a Jackery Solar Generator 2000 + panels does not give you legal plug-in balcony solar in Utah or Maryland.

Why comments confuse them

EcoFlow sells both STREAM (grid-tie microinverter) and Delta (power station). Same brand, different product categories.

Bluetti and Jackery marketing uses “solar generator” language that sounds like balcony solar. European buyers use portable setups differently because Balkonkraftwerk is a distinct product category with grid feedback.

US Reddit threads asking “is Bluetti worth it for balcony solar payback” are comparing apples to camping gear.

When a power station makes sense

  • You want backup power during outages
  • You cannot get landlord approval for fixed panels
  • You need portable power for other uses

Pair a small power station with grid-tie plug-in solar if you want both bill offset and backup. That is two purchases, not one.

When plug-in solar makes sense

  • Your state has an enabling law (or you accept gray-zone DIY risk)
  • Goal is lower monthly bill, not backup
  • You have a fixed balcony, patio, or fence mount
