My verdict: buy the control meter made for your inverter. Use Craftstrom PowerMeter with Craftstrom, APsystems APmeter with EZ1, and Mango Smart Gateway Lite with Mango Power S. Do not buy an Emporia Vue expecting it to stop solar export. Vue measures power, but it does not command any of these inverters to reduce output.
Zero-export hardware is useful control equipment. It is not a legal exemption. It does not, by itself, waive an interconnection agreement, electrical permit, state restriction, landlord approval, or utility rule.

The $90 APmeter price comes from the official APsystems store. The current Emporia range starts at $99.99, while the 8-sensor configuration is $149.99 on Emporia’s official store. Our catalog rounds that common configuration to $150.
How zero export actually works
A current transformer, usually called a CT, clamps around a service conductor and measures the direction and amount of power at the home-grid boundary. The controller compares household demand with solar production. If production is higher, it tells the compatible inverter to reduce output.
For example, suppose your panels can make 800W and your home is using 500W:
800W solar - 500W load = 300W potential export
The controller targets roughly 500W of inverter output, often with a small import offset. If a 1,200W kettle switches off, household demand can fall faster than the system reacts. That is why “zero export” should be read as a control target, not a physical guarantee that no watt ever crosses the meter.
Wi-Fi, cloud service, CT orientation, device pairing, firmware, and communication delay can all affect control. A sensible fail state reduces or stops inverter output when meter data disappears. Confirm the behavior in the exact product manual.
Craftstrom PowerMeter is the integrated choice
The Craftstrom PowerMeter comes in an external-CT version for US split-phase panels and an internal-sensor DIN-rail version. Craftstrom lists ETL, FCC, CE, and RoHS certifications for the meter and a 10-year warranty.
Craftstrom says its proprietary internal communication updates every 0.1 seconds, throttling its inverters or sending surplus to a compatible battery. Wi-Fi supplies app data, while the company says MHz communication handles internal operation. Those are vendor claims, not an independent no-export test.
Buy it if you already chose a Craftstrom kit or want that company’s solar and battery ecosystem. Do not buy it as a generic controller for an APsystems or Mango inverter. The value is the closed-loop integration.
One caveat is more important than the response-time claim. Craftstrom markets its system as “permission-free.” Your authority having jurisdiction, utility tariff, state law, HOA rules, and lease still apply. APmeter is the best value for an EZ1
The APsystems APmeter product page says the meter works with the EZ1, AP EasyPower app, Wi-Fi, and cloud-based controls. It dynamically adjusts output and includes an offset function intended to reduce unintended export when loads fluctuate.
At $90, this is the most attractive option if you are already building around the UL 3700-certified EZ1-LV. It is not a universal CT monitor. Its purpose is to control APsystems EZ1 devices.
The cloud dependency deserves attention. Ask APsystems what the inverter does during an internet outage, router replacement, server outage, or lost APmeter connection. Test that fail state after installation. A limiter that worked during commissioning can still lose communication months later.

Mango Gateway Lite is mandatory outside Utah in Mango’s design
Mango says the Smart Gateway Lite is required for Mango Power S PIPV systems outside Utah to enable zero export. The same page also says use is subject to local grid interconnection approval.
The vendor claims 0.5% metering accuracy and a response of 0.25 seconds or less. Its 1,200W kit page lists the gateway as included and claims 200ms anti-backflow response. Both figures come from Mango, so I would treat them as design specifications rather than a guarantee against every transient.
Buy it with the Mango kit. The gateway supports plug-in or hard-wired installation, but CT placement and panel work are not casual DIY tasks. Hire an electrician if opening the service panel would expose energized conductors.
Emporia Vue monitors but cannot throttle these systems
The Emporia Vue 3 is a good energy monitor. It can show whole-home import, solar behavior, and individual circuit demand. That makes it useful for checking whether your base load is high enough to consume balcony solar.
It does not speak Craftstrom’s control protocol, AP EasyPower, or Mango’s inverter controls. It cannot turn a graph into zero export. Buying Vue plus an unsupported inverter leaves you with better evidence of backfeed, not a way to stop it.
Choose Vue if you want independent monitoring, appliance-level data, or a second opinion on a vendor system. The 8-sensor package costs about $150. The base whole-home package is cheaper, and the 16-sensor package costs more.

Compatibility beats sensor accuracy. A precise monitor with no command path cannot limit an inverter.
When no zero-export meter is needed
Skip the meter in four clear cases:
- Your solar is not grid-parallel. Panels charging a portable battery that powers isolated appliance outlets cannot export through the utility meter.
- You have approved interconnection and export is allowed. A conventional permitted system may export under its utility agreement.
- Your enacted state process explicitly permits your qualifying plug-in system without zero export. Follow its wattage, listing, circuit, notice, and labeling rules.
- Your compatible battery accepts all solar before an inverter reaches the household circuit. Verify the architecture and fail behavior. A battery in the product name does not prove electrical isolation.
A steady daytime base load is not enough reason to skip control when export is prohibited. Refrigerators cycle. Computers sleep. Breakers trip. Loads change faster than a monthly bill can reveal.
Before buying any meter, check the plug-in solar state-law tracker and the best balcony solar kits comparison. Then ask the vendor for three answers in writing: the compatible inverter models, the no-communications fail state, and whether local approval is still required.
