What is the cheapest electricity rate in Illinois right now?
As of June 22, 2026, the lowest all-in fixed residential plan we rank is MC Squared Energy Services, LLC (Smart Value Power Program) at 5.85¢/kWh for ComEd customers, on a 12-month term. "All-in" means we add each plan's monthly fee to the headline rate — so low teaser rates with high fees don't look artificially cheap. The best plan depends on your utility; see the leaderboard above.
Is Illinois deregulated for electricity?
Yes. Illinois allows residential customers to choose their electricity supplier while the local utility still delivers power, reads the meter, and handles outages. Only the supply (generation) portion of your bill changes when you switch suppliers.
Is a fixed or variable rate better?
A fixed rate locks your supply price for the contract term. A variable rate can start lower as a teaser but can rise with the market with no cap. For most households a fixed rate is the safer choice.
