How we score readiness

Four things decide whether plug-in solar makes sense for you. Legality: a handful of states have explicitly legalized plug-in solar, and many more have bills moving — the checker pulls your state's current status. Place: a yard, patio, or balcony rail with a nearby outdoor outlet is what you need; a window-only space is the one real blocker.

Sun: a south-facing, open-sky spot produces the most; north-facing or heavily shaded spots still work but pay back slower. Self-consumption: because most plug-in systems aren't credited for exported power, the more of your own solar you use as it's made — by being home during the day or adding a small battery — the faster it pays for itself.
