Apartment Solar Panels: What Works in 2026

Rooftop solar isn't an option for most apartment renters. Balcony and window-mount plug-in systems are. Here's what actually works, what it costs, and what it saves.

Rooftop solar is not available to apartment renters. The landlord owns the roof, and even if they were willing to install panels, the economics only work for the person paying the electricity bill. That is why plug-in balcony solar exists as a separate product category, and why it has gained serious traction in the US over the last 18 months.

The short version: a $700–$1,500 system that you mount on your balcony railing, hang in a south-facing window, or set on a patio can reduce your electricity bill by $120–$450 per year depending on where you live. It plugs into a standard outlet. No permits, no installer, no landlord involvement beyond what your state’s renter protection laws already require.

What “apartment solar panels” actually means

The term covers a few different configurations. What they have in common: small panels (400–1,200W total), a microinverter that converts DC output to AC, and a plug that goes into a wall outlet. Your meter slows down while the sun is producing.

The three configurations that work in apartments:

Balcony rail mount. Two panels clamped to a balcony railing. This is the most common setup in Europe and the most practical for US apartments. You need a south-to-west facing balcony with an outdoor GFCI outlet within cable reach. Most installs take 30–45 minutes.

Window mount. A single panel suspended in or outside a south-facing window using suction cups or a bracket. Lower output (200–400W) but works when there is no outdoor space. Better than nothing for north-facing units.

Ground or patio mount. For ground-floor tenants or those with large patios. A freestanding frame you place in the sunniest corner, pointed south. Takes 30 minutes to set up and you can bring it inside when you move.

What a typical apartment system actually produces

I have run these numbers against real interval data from our utility billing database. An 800W system producing at California rates tells the story cleanly.

Peak sun hours in a moderate-sun state (say, Georgia or Virginia): 4.3 hours/day. Apply a real-world efficiency discount of 15% for temperature, soiling, and inverter losses. Usable production: 800W x 4.3h x 0.85 = 2.92 kWh/day.

At 70% self-consumption (you are home during the day, running a fridge, lights, router): 2.04 kWh/day actually displaces grid power. At Virginia’s average rate of 16.4¢/kWh, that is $0.33/day, or about $120/year.

In California, Massachusetts, or Connecticut where rates run 28–34¢/kWh, the same production saves $210–$260/year. At Hawaii’s 42¢/kWh, it pushes $315.

That is before any premium from time-of-use rates. If your utility charges peak prices of $0.45–$0.55/kWh in the afternoon and your panels are producing during those hours, the savings are meaningfully higher.

What your apartment needs for this to work

Four things matter before you spend money on a kit:

A GFCI-protected outlet within cable reach of your sunny space. Most modern apartments have these on balconies and in kitchens. If your building was built before 1975, you may not have outdoor GFCI outlets. This is the first thing to check.

South-to-west orientation with unobstructed sky. North-facing balconies produce 40–60% less than south-facing ones. An east-facing balcony still works for morning generation. You do not need direct roof access. You need a line-of-sight to sky in roughly the solar south direction.

State-level legal clarity. Seven states have enacted plug-in solar laws as of June 2026 (Utah, Maine, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire). In those states, landlords cannot legally prohibit you from installing a qualifying system. In other states, the rules are murkier. California is close, with SB 868 moving through the Assembly. Lease review. Even in states with legal protections, your lease may have provisions about exterior modifications. The protections in enacted laws generally override restrictive lease clauses, but reviewing your lease before installing is worth 10 minutes.

What kits are available and what they cost

The market is still thin compared to Europe, but a few reliable options exist for US apartments.

For balcony rail installs, the Craftstrom 800W system and the EcoFlow Balcony Power Station are the two most commonly cited products as of 2026. Both include panels, a microinverter, mounting hardware, and a cord with a standard plug. Both are in the $700–$1,200 range before tax.

For window mounts, single-panel units from Yuma Solar and a few Amazon imports work, but the UL certification situation is mixed. I would not install anything without a UL-listed or UL 3700-certified microinverter. The panels themselves are not the safety risk; the inverter is.

Payback period for a $900 system saving $180/year: five years. At $200/year savings in California: 4.5 years. Once paid off, the panels produce for free. Most are warranted for 25 years.

Adding battery storage

Without a battery, your system exports any surplus to the grid with no compensation in most enacted states. If you are away from home during peak sun hours, self-consumption drops and effective savings shrink.

A small integrated battery ($600–$1,200 additional) stores surplus for evening use and doubles as backup power during outages. The economic case depends on how much of the day you are home. For a fully remote worker who runs a home office, the battery is probably not needed. For someone who leaves at 7am and returns at 6pm, the battery raises self-consumption from 50% to 80%+ and shortens the payback period.

Talking to your landlord

In the seven enacted states, you do not need landlord permission, though notifying them before installation is required in most laws. For everyone else, a written request letter that explains the minimal footprint, zero structural modification, and your plan to remove the system at move-out tends to go better than asking verbally.
